Mzansi is beaming with Pride as our very own Queens – Tyla and Makhadzi continue to fly the South African flag high globally.
International music sensation, Tyla and Makhadzi have brought home two wins from the BET Awards 2024, held in Los Angeles last night.
Tyla rose to international fame with the release of her 2023 single “Water”, which entered the top ten in sixteen countries including the United Kingdom and United States. “Water” was the first song by a South African soloist to enter the US Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years.
Earlier this year Tyla won the Best African Music Performance category at the 2024 66th Grammy Awards at Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.
In a triumphant return to the winner’s circle, the songstress won in two categories at the BET Awards 2024. She won the awards for Best New Artist and Best International Act.
Tyla made history by becoming the first-ever African artist to win two awards in one night at the BET Awards show. The 22 years old continues to make history for Africa.
Tyla is not the only South Africa who made us proud at this year’s BET Awards. Makhadzi also took home the award for Best New International Artist.
The Number 1 hitmaker was nominated alongside fellow South African Star Tyler ICU and other musicians in the Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act
The songstress shared a tear-jerking thank-you speech after collecting her award.
She had the entire nation reaching out for tissues in a video she shared of herself when she broke down after being handed the BET award, speaking about her humble beginnings: “I’m so happy. I started making and selling my music in the streets, and today, I’m here; my dream came true. All I can say is, ‘It’s possible, black child, you can make it.’ This is the best birthday ever!
Newly appointed Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie took to X to congratulate the winning duo. “Things are happening already, congratulations 2 both ladies, we wanna assure South Africans that we will not be a Ministry that will be content with congratulating artist and creatives only but will go out and unearth more Tyla’s & Makhadzi’s, help us find more future super stars”.
Congratulations to Tyla and Makhadzi!
