This set of impressive results secured Esau top spot amongst theWestern Cape-based Engen Maths and Science School leaners who wrotematric in 2019. Esau, along with second-placed Western Cape matric, Fatima Floris(Claremont High School) and third-placed, Abdullah Jaffer (ClaremontHigh School) were acknowledged at an awards ceremony at the CapePeninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in Cape Town on Saturday, 8February to celebrate the outstanding results of the matric class of2019. Engen’s long-running Engen Maths and Science School programme offerssupplementary Maths, Science and English tuition to underprivilegedgrade 10-12 learners. The 2019 Engen Maths and Science School matric class attained animpressive 96% overall pass rate of which 70% attained bachelor passes,versus the broader South African matric pass rate of 81%. The Top Learner Abdurahmaan Esau during the presentation of Certificates for the Top 3 Achievers of the Engen EMSS Western Cape region. Esau, who hails from Silvertown in Athlone, attributes his excellent2019 matric results to the extra classes provided by the Engen Maths andScience School initiative. “Engen Maths and Science School helped me in so many ways especiallyhaving teachers that were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, forwhich I remain extremely grateful,” says the 19-year-old. Esau says the experience also helped him improve his self-confidence. “When I first joined the Engen Maths and Science School, I wasextremely shy and never spoke in class, but as time went by myconfidence grew and I was able to participate and answer questions.”
Engen pledges R2.5m to schools
As a company that cares deeply about the communities in which it operates, Engen has heeded a call from government and pledged an initial R2.5 million in support of Sanitation Appropriate for Education (SAFE), which aims to eradicate pit latrines in schools across South Africa.
