SA Youth Leader’s Climate Initiative Goes Global

As climate issues continue to have an impact in communities across Africa, young leaders like Lindelani Donald Maraganedzha are at the forefront, driving change and bringing about solutions rooted in innovation and community action.

The South African environmental leader and Co-Founder of the Universal Greening Organization (UGO) is supporting local communities such as Tshwane to tackle climate change with practical solutions.

The UGO’s Urban Heat Resilience – South Africa project, is tackling soaring temperatures head-on by blending technology with community driven action. A prototype app empowers residents to find local heat “hotspots, guiding strategic tree planting to cool down the area for maximum impact.

“Different areas experience heat differently, and we need data to respond properly,” Maraganedzha explains.

The initiative is all about empowering communities to take ownership of their environment. Trees get tagged with QR codes and residents become climate guardians as they get to learn about the different tree species, track/monitor their condition, and even report when there are issues, turning everyday people into active participants in climate action.

Consequently, this local initiative is catching on across continental momentum.

UGO’s recent involvement in a climate resilience co-creation workshop in Ghana, highlights the value of pan African climate partnerships. For Maraganedzha, the collaboration across the continent is essential as it is all about sharing knowledge and resources to amplify impact, because climate challenges are not limited by borders.

“Many of the climate challenges we face are shared. By working together, we can exchange knowledge and build stronger, locally relevant solutions,” he says.

Maraganedzha’s approach puts communities and young people as the front and centre, empowering them to drive their own climate solutions rather than being on the receiving end.

His message to young Africans is simple but powerful: taking initiative, no matter how small.

Start where you are with what you have and with what you know. Small actions, when taken consistently and collectively, can grow into powerful solutions that shape the future of our communities and our continent”
