Across South Africa, unsung heroes are making a difference quietly changing lives, building stronger communities, and inspiring others.
The South African Heroes Awards is calling on the nation to recognise these unsung heroes, with nominations for the 8th annual instalment taking place on November 28, 2026. This initiative celebrates ordinary South Africans doing extra ordinary things to uplift their communities.
The awards honour individuals and organisations driving a meaningful impact including educators, healthcare workers, and social innovators to grassroots community champions and creatives. Over the past seven years, they have shone a light on untold stories of resilience, leadership, and innovation.
“It is common that many of the heroes we are looking for don’t seek the spotlight. To ensure genuine grassroots impact is recognised, we invite those who have benefited from the heroes’ work to nominate them. Our vetting committee then verifies each nomination before selecting finalists for the public vote,” the awards founder, Amanda Matshaka adds.
The awards also celebrate the power of storytelling. Categories including Community Media of the Year and Community Journalist of the Year honour journalists and media outlets, highlighting stories that uplift and empower communities. “If it wasn’t for these storytellers, we wouldn’t hear about these selfless heroic acts,” Matshaka, explains.
Meshack Soka, winner of the 2023 Youth Empowerment category, is a standout example of inspiration:
“Winning the South African Heroes Award changed everything for my community projects. Before, I was just starting the Sekhukhune Sanitary Project, buying school shoes and sanitary packs for teens in Limpopo. After the award, organisations like Anglo American stepped in with support; we received 100-thousand rand to expand our reach. It also opened doors to showcase our work publicly, like building charity houses in our villages. Being nominated by the people my work impacts made me feel seen and encouraged — it showed that what we do, even in small communities, can inspire and attract real support.”

For those thinking of holding back from nominating themselves, the awards send a clear message: “Your drive to make change is enough. Take the opportunity to have your work celebrated so that more support can come your way. Pat yourself on the back, you’ve done very well! You’re worth celebrating!”, Matshaka concluded.
