“This opportunity is a game-changer, not just for me, but for the men’s health movement in South Africa

Bokang Morure, an award-winning men’s health advocate, clinician, and community leader, has been selected as a 2025 Mandela Washington Fellow, a flagship initiative of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). This highly competitive program, initiated by the U.S. Department of State, recognizes exceptional young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa who are driving transformative change in their communities.

A Trailblazer in Men’s Health & Public Service

Morure is a Regional Coordinator at TB HIV Care, where he is leading efforts to improve healthcare access for men, promote HIV/TB prevention, and address mental health challenges. His leadership has been instrumental in designing health interventions for underserved populations, including men in correctional facilities who often face barriers to care.

His dedication to public health has earned him multiple national recognitions, including:

  •  Men of the Year 2023 – For his outstanding contributions to men’s health.
  •  Most Influential Youth in Health & Well-being (Mail & Guardian, 2024) – Recognizing his impact in South Africa’s public health sector.
  •  South African Heroes Award (Community Health Category, 2024) – Celebrating his role in advancing community-based healthcare solutions.
  • 100 Shining Stars Award (2025) – Honoring his leadership in public health and social impact.

 A Transformational Leadership Opportunity

As part of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Morure will travel to the United States in June 2025 to participate in a six-week Leadership Institute at a renowned U.S. university. The Fellowship will provide advanced training in leadership, public health strategy, and policy development, along with opportunities to engage with U.S. government officials, industry experts, and African changemakers.

“This opportunity is a game-changer—not just for me, but for the men’s health movement in South Africa. I am committed to learning from global best practices, building international collaborations, and using this platform to advocate for stronger healthcare policies for men,” said Morure.

Following the program, he will join the Mandela Washington Fellowship Alumni Network, an influential group of African leaders working on policy change, social innovation, and sustainable development across the continent.

Raising the Flag for South Africa

Morure’s selection as a Mandela Washington Fellow places him among an elite group of 30-40 young South Africans chosen annually, out of thousands of applicants. His journey underscores the power of youth leadership in transforming health systems and empowering communities.
