“We’re creating a world where simple things spark imagination and where joy and connection can be found in the magic world of theatre…”

National Children’s Theatre (NCT) is set to welcome young audiences to forge a special friendship this December holiday with the award-winning production, Balloonacy.

Balloonacy follows the story of a grumpy old man celebrating his birthday alone, when a magical balloon appears at his window. Set in his solitary ways, everything changes for him when he is then forced to share his home with this zippy, lively balloon, which teases him out of his solitary funk.

Balloonacy combines the imaginative power of play with elements of mime, clowning and more, it’s no-dialogue, one-performer show that presents a series of comical and touching moments where the old man and the balloon explore the power of friendship and discover how, with a little imagination and acceptance, companionship is everywhere.

The masterpiece is packed with physical comedy that will charm and delight young audiences of all ages, this award-winning play shows how with a little imagination and acceptance, companionship can come from the most unlikely places. Children will enjoy interacting with the old man and the balloon and are in for a riotous laugh. They will walk out utterly charmed by the old man and the red balloon.

“Since there is no spoken dialogue, toddlers and young children will readily understand the story and be fascinated by the antics of the balloon. They will find the idea that a balloon can be your playmate is most appealing,” said Moira Katz, NCT’s interim CEO.

“We’re creating a world where simple things spark imagination, and where joy and connection can be found in the magic world of theatre. This should appeal to all ages”, Moira concluded,

Recommended for audiences ages 2 years and older, Balloonacy is an amusing 45-minute mime show written by Barry Kornhauser, an award-winning playwright, director and educator. Berry is well recognized for his many contributions to the cultural enrichment of children. The incredibly talented Craig Morris plays the old man.
