Reigning Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi took to social media to commemorate Youth Day.

“16 June 1976! On this day, after days of planning. Black students from all over Soweto, South Africa took to the streets on a peaceful protest. They were protesting, fighting a system that was designed to opress them. They were children from as young as 12 years old. The police opened fire, killing hundreds of the students”.

“Today we know this day as Youth Day. A day dedicated to the fearless class of 1976. A class who knew that if they were not doing it for themselves then at least they would be doing it for their children, the future. They left a baton for us to pick up. They wanted us to grab it, run with it and live a life that they could only ever dream of. A life that they died for – for you and me.
Happy Youth Day South Africa. The class of 1976 ran their mile. The work is not done. It is now our responsibility to do our part”, Tunzi wrote.
