It was a night to remember as we danced to the rhythm of history! The highly anticipated 2024 Legends and Legacy Ball Africa Awards took place on 13 July 2024 at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg.

This year’s spectacular event was a grand celebration of 30 years of democracy in South Africa and the spirit of African unity, marking a significant milestone in the continent’s history.

Princess of Africa, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, was given the royal treatment she deserves. Chaka Chaka looked so regal in her 3 outfit changes for the night. Her performance proved to all attendees how she got the “Princess of Africa” title. Like fine wine – she gets better with time.

She was gifted with a 24-carat gold gong, pure-cut gold brooch and a traditional garment from Ghana.

The veteran musician was the main honouree at the award ceremony, which for the first time staged in SA. She was recognised for always promoting African music beyond the continent.

“It feels good to be recognised at this calibre. I feel honoured and seen. It’s quite lovely to be given your flowers while you can still smell them,” she said.

“If it wasn’t for artists who opened doors for us, I don’t believe I would have received such an award.

“These artists paved the way for singers such as myself and showed us how to use our craft to promote humanity, fight oppression through songs and spread love through our African culture”, Chaka Chaka added.

Actress Lerato Mvelase understood the assignment as the host of the special occasion, with her charisma and charm, she kept the event in perfect harmony. It’s safe to say, she ate and left no crumbs. The evening stunned with electrifying performance from gospel singer Mpumi Mtsweni, who took attendees back to church. Then there was Legendary Afro-pop group Mafikizolo, reminding guests why they are still the best in the game after 27 years. DJ Zinhle blazed the dance floors with her popular hits.

Camidoh from Ghana and Chaka Chaka’s son Mfumu Mhinga aka DJ Shilly Mingz were also on the line-up.

Congolese singer-songwriter and dancer Koffi Olomide was also present at the glamourous occasion.

“This is my calling and purpose. I am doing what God called me to do. I appreciate all the accolades, they validate all the efforts I’ve put in throughout the years,” said Chaka Chaka.

In addition to honouring the esteemed Princess of Africa, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, the event also paid tribute to the legends who have set the stage for South African music: Hugh Masekela, Johnny Clegg, Brenda Fassie, Miriam Makeba, and Lucky Dube.

Their timeless musical contributions continue to strike a chord with audiences around the world.

It was an unforgettable night that celebrated African unity, culture, and the incredible journey of democracy in South Africa.
